Oracle changed some installation Steps for the Database Version 18c.
One thing is that there should be a rpm installation (according to “Release Schedule of Current Database Releases (Doc ID 742060.1)” still in development (10.09.2018)).
Then there is the possibility of a read only installation ( another Blog post will describe this).
Then there is the new behavior of the “traditional” installation way.
Before 18c the downloaded installation package was extracted to a temporary location and then installed to the – during the installation mentioned – ORACLE_HOME. With 18c you extract the installation file to the final ORACLE_HOME directory. This leads to a shorter installation phase (less copying). Further there is the possibility to patch the home to the latest RU or patch.
-applyRU - apply release update to the Oracle home.
For the installation in silent mode there are less parameter required ( ORACLE_HOME defined thru the location where the files were unzipped). Unfortunately I currently did not find a current and complete documentation of all possible parameters. But if I use the applyRU parameter with the location of the 18.3.0.0 RU (Patch# 28090523) as parameter value I get the error that bundle.xml is required. It seams that the installer is searching for this exact file, even the default PatchSearch.xml is located there. But there is a short work around. I only have to rename the file in the extracted patch to bundl.xml (see below). This enables us to install a new ORACLE_HOME patched to the most current RU in an automated way.
